I had lots of fun reading all the
fkficfest stories this year. Great to see so many new stories! What imagination! What variety! As someone who enjoys many genres, vibes, and interpretations of the FK universe and its characters, I was very well-satisfied. We had serious and introspective, action-packed and harrowing, and delightful absurdity. Wonderful!
I hope we play again next year!
Until then, I shall get back to:
Recapping/reviewing/writing too many words about season 2 episodes. Next on deck is "Amateur Night," an episode I missed when Mr. SwitchbladeEyes and I watched the series a couple years ago. It's an episode that I kiiiiiiinda remember, but not in much detail.
Throwing out the occasional "general discussion" post, as the fannish spirit moves me.
Working on my WIPs that have been sitting around neglected and gathering dust for 2+ months.
Now I'm going to chat about my WIPs just 'cause I feel like it...
Last year, I was quite prolific with finishing stories.
Not quite so much this year.
I have some more time constraints this year, but also, my WIPs have been skewing much loooooonger than my average. Tossing out last year's high outlier and the low outlier, the mean average word count for my stories was 5,618 last year. This year, if I finish any of the WIPs described below, I think my FK Fic Fest story will be on the low end at "only" 11k words. (Though if I get in a
spook_me story this year, I suspect that would be short. I'll try to take that challenge seriously this year!... Maybe! π¦ )
Anyhoo, I'm not sure there's much of an appetite among readers for longer stories. But the writing heart wants what the writing heart wants. Who am I to fight it?
I typically have multiple WIPs going at any one time. I like to bounce around from story to story (and I also write random scenes that come into my head that don't go with a story yet). Bouncing around keeps me from getting bored. Also, I find it helps to step away from stories sometimes so I can come back with a fresher perspective.
I am trying to focus on my more well-developed WIPs and not get distracted by new, shiny ideas. Those ideas can go live on "the pile" for now. Below are my most active WIPs at the moment (all titles tentative):
Taking the Bullet. Cohen and Nick partner together for one night on a stakeout to gather evidence against the Constantine organization.
Okay, so actually, this one has not been sitting around neglected and gathering dust for 2+ months. This was the story #2 that I was working on for FK Fic Fest, but I wasn't satisfied with how it turned out. I'm still noodling through how to fix it and have been writing down ideas. I have some sense of what I want to change. We shall see! I'm going to keep at it because I'm super invested at this point and it bugs me that the show never had a "Cohen episode."
A Hunger for Fairy Tales. The actions of Nick, Janette, and LaCroix during the London Blitz in WWII come back to haunt them. Schanke is rattled by a case involving a missing child. Vampire hunter Liam O'Neal returns to Toronto.
Events of WWII London in season 1's "Father Figure" have stayed with me. This fic deals with those events and the aftermath across time. It is π― percent my fan fic white whale!! No joke, I have been working on this story, off and on, nearly as long as I have been back to writing fic. Over 2 years! Inspired by an FK Fic Fest 2023 prompt. I keep coming back to it. Like Captain Ahab, I am not a quitter (lol, okay, prob not the best example 'cause that guy should definitely have quitβ¦ but you get my point). One of my fic goals this year is to finish this, but if I don't, no big deal. For a lot of reasons, this one has been challenging!
Thirty Years. After staking Nick 30 years ago, LaCroix is drawn back to Toronto only to discover things are not as he had supposed. A private detective hired to investigate theft of pharmaceutical research makes a seemingly impossible discovery.
I have it in my head that I can actually finish this in time to post it on the 30-year anniversary of FK's finale. I mean exactly on that day. Possibly overly optimistic on my part π§. If I want to do FK Fic Fest next year, assuming similar timing to this year, I'll have to have this story done much earlier than that. If I can't get it done, I'll punt it to the 31-year anniversary even though that's not a nice, round number lol.
Cloak and Dagger. LaCroix drags a morose Nick to Venice for Carnival following the breakup with Janette in the "Partners of the Month" flashbacks. Once there, to distract Nick from his obsessive melancholy, LaCroix challenges him to unravel a secret of one of the city's noblemen.
Artists! Courtesans! Mystery! Intrigue! A fun romp through the streets, sheets, and palazzos of 16th century Venice. This one is spicy, hot, caliente! πΆοΈπ₯π
The story started with no plot whatsoever. I was on a road trip and for no reason, while I was staring out the car window listening to power ballads, a very explicit Nick/LC scene popped into my head. Like WTF, where did that come from? Of course, I wrote it all down as soon as possible. I alerted my (non-FK fan, but ever so supportive, bless them) writing buddies about this development, but lamented that I had no plot. I was assured that the fic does not need a plot. But I like to write a plot, goddammit! I have subsequently read a lot about the history of Venice, and have figured out the plot. Venice turns out to be a great place to set a story! Working on this saucy fic has been lots of fun and I look forward to continuing.
Meanwhile, here's a meme one of the aforementioned writing buddies shared, which made me feel CALLED OUT π
