The
fkficfest prompts are out. I'm looking forward to seeing what people come up with.
Writing fic has been a great creative and emotional outlet for me personally these past couple of years. Why FK in particular? I don't know. But as my country slips deeper into brazen lawlessness and breathtaking incompetence at the federal level, I'm grateful for such an outlet.
Last year, someone suggested combining prompts. And I found that combining winning prompts with losing prompts really helped with brainstorming. That exercise put different spins on the winning prompts, fueling fires in the imagination. I will be doing it again, and mention it in case anyone else might find it helpful.
Good luck, FK peeps, see y’all on the other side! 🫡

Date: 2025-03-25 09:17 am (UTC)Good luck to you, too! Fanfiction has really been a good and creative way of escapism these last years. Combining winning and "losing" prompts is a cool idea. I'm surprised at the voting results, I'd have thought some other prompts would have been picked, but there are still some prompts that I have some ideas about. Is there a fave of yours among the winning prompts?

How about you?

Date: 2025-03-25 02:56 pm (UTC)FK fandom is very vigorously diverse. ;-) We agree only on liking FK, not on the show's themes, characters, purpose, genre... ;-)
FWIW, the decisively top-ranked prompt this year got these votes (10, 4, 4, 11, 2, 15, 12, 15, 14, 1, 4, 19) while one of the lowest-ranked prompts got these votes (31, 1, 21, 22, 30, 21, 18, 26, (33+ NA), 31, 30, 28).

Date: 2025-03-25 04:52 pm (UTC)Please correct me if I'm wrong, I really think I am, but you sound to me like I've attacked you with my comment. I just thought that taking into account the past final prompts, the ranking would look different. Just surprised, is all. I'm happy with the outcome. :)

Date: 2025-03-25 05:21 pm (UTC)Just taking it all as interesting to see how things shook out with the various prompts, personal surprises and all.
I thought the brackets were fun last year to see how prompts moved in the rankings in "real time," but of course that was a lot of work to get to the same results anyway so didn't make a lot of sense to repeat.

Date: 2025-03-26 02:21 pm (UTC)I felt that your "I'd have thought some other prompts would have been picked" sounded bewildered by the community's choices. So I tried to explain the collective mind of the community, so to speak, to the extent that I understand it -- which is: we don't widely agree on much, or widely share many inclinations, so the elected prompts each year are usually somewhere in the "upper middle" of most everyone's preferences, instead of expressing consensus.

Date: 2025-03-26 04:31 pm (UTC)Ok, I'm glad it was just a misunderstanding. :) I wasn't bewildered, just thought that other prompts would have been more popular. But as you said, the community's preferences are very diverse. For some of the top 5 I have some vague ideas I'll mull over. How about you, are the prompts resonating with you?

Date: 2025-03-28 02:25 pm (UTC)Thank you for asking. :-) No, no ideas yet. I need to rewatch some episodes and hope they light a spark.
The hairbrush prompt can easily be used to trigger a flashback to something a writer wants to address. It might be interesting to have it go against expectations and be a character other than Nick or Lacroix having such a flashback -- Natalie's brother Richard is blond, for example, and I believe his daughter is, too, though I should check that to confirm.

Date: 2025-03-29 04:43 pm (UTC)So many possibilities with the blond hair, either in flashbacks or the present. That's great. Tracy would also be a good candidate. I do think Richard was blond, too. There are definitely some episodes to rewatch. :)

Date: 2025-03-26 01:52 am (UTC)For me, I look at the prompts with the eyes of both a reader and a writer. I rank highly prompts which might develop into stories I would like to read, but I also look with the view of what stories I think I could do justice to as a writer. My nightmare would be to be faced with a slate a prompts I'd struggle to write a good story for.
Maybe that's overthinking it! I do like the idea of utilizing the non-selected prompts to get ideas flowing! And I do like the prompts that have been chosen--I think they each could go in many different directions.
